Toddlers Left Alone With Half-Ounce of Crack

February 19, 2013

The Press-Citizen reports:

Police said they witnessed a young child playing with a crack rock after they responded to an Iowa City residence for a 911 call.

Iowa City police officers responded to 1926 Broadway St., Apt. G, at 7:08 p.m. Wednesday for a child calling 911. Criminal complaints do not indicate why the child called 911.

Police spoke with the resident, 25-year-old Tiffany S. Johnson, who said she had left her three children – ages 7, 4 and 3 – alone while she went to Kmart. While police were speaking with Johnson, they observed one of her children playing with a rock of crack.

Johnson allegedly admitted to police that she sells crack, a more potent and addictive form of cocaine. Johnson told police she was storing the crack in a can in her bedroom. After obtaining consent to search her apartment, police said they found 12 grams of crack, packaged for sale, in the can Johnson described.

Johnson was arrested and faces charges of controlled substance violation, a class C felony; Iowa drug tax stamp violation, a class D felony; using her residence to store or sell controlled substances, an aggravated misdemeanor; and child endangerment without injury, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Iowa City Police Sgt. Vicki Lalla said the Department of Human Services was called in to remove the children from the residence.

Johnson remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

Shaneka’s Ire Engulfs Cop and Baby Daddy

February 7, 2013

The Press-Citizen reports:

A Coralville woman is accused of assaulting police and her child’s father after police removed the child from her custody.

According to Coralville police criminal complaints, on Feb. 6, officers were called to 508 Fifth St., the home of 25-year-old Shaneka Alexander, to remove her 3-month-old child from her custody. The criminal complaint does not specify why police were there to remove the child.

Police said while an officer was holding onto Alexander’s child, Alexander came at him several times and pushed him. Alexander was warned several times to keep her distance from the officer and not push him, police said.

After the child was taken into custody, police said an officer witnessed Alexander hitting the child’s father while the man was sitting in his car.

Police arrested Alexander and she now faces charges of domestic assault, a simple misdemeanor; and assault on police officers, a serious misdemeanor.

Robbery Spree Turns out to be Bad Idea

January 10, 2013

The ICPD reports:

At 11:41 PM, Tuesday, January 8th, officers from the Iowa City Police Department responded to the area of Fairchild and North Van Buren Streets reference a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.
Responding officers met with the adult male victim, a Marcos Taxi driver, who reported that he had just been robbed at gunpoint. The victim picked up the lone male suspect at 2401 Highway 6 E and drove him to Market Street. Once they reached their destination the suspect pointed a handgun at the cab driver and demanded money and the driver’s cell phone. The victim gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash and his cell phone then exited the cab and ran from the area, leaving the suspect in the cab. When officers arrived the cab was no longer where the driver left it parked. The victim was not injured and provided the following description of the suspect: black male, tall with a thin build, wearing a dark blue winter jacket and jeans.
Approximately two hours later the Coralville Police Department responded to a report of another cab stolen and the cab driver robbed at gunpoint. The description of the suspect matched the suspect from the earlier robbery in Iowa City.
Coralville Police located the stolen cab being operated by the suspect who was subsequently arrested and identified as Bruce Steven Austin, Jr., 12-12-91, of Iowa City.
The cab driver that was robbed in Iowa City positively identified Austin as the man that robbed him.
Bruce Steven Austin Jr., was charged by the Iowa City Police with the following:
Robbery 1st Degree, a Class B Felony
Operating a Motor Vehicle without Owner’s Consent, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.
The Marcos Taxi vehicle was later located in a parking lot on Heinz Road in Iowa City.

November 26, 2012

The ICPD reports:

On November 22, 2012 at approximately 2:23 a.m., Iowa City Police officers responded to Suburban BP at 1905 Keokuk St. for a report of an armed robbery. While enroute, officers were informed that the suspect had pointed a handgun at the employee and leaned over the counter and demanded cash from the register. The suspect then took off on foot in an unknown direction. Officers flooded the area in an attempt to locate the suspect.

According to the victim, the gun pulled was a small black handgun and she described the suspect as a black male, 5’6″ – 5’8″, slender build, wearing a dark jacket or sweatshirt, dark pants, a dark colored hair net on his head, and an additional covering over his nose and mouth.

“Freaky Tone” Sought in Home Invasion

November 7, 2012

The ICPD reports:

On November 4, 2012 at approximately 12:14 a.m., Iowa City Police Officers responded to a residence in the Wetherby Neighborhood on the southeast side of Iowa City for a report of a burglary in progress. While enroute, officers were informed that a person had forced entry into the residence and attempted to steal several items. At some point, the victim woke up, confronted the suspect, and chased him out of the residence. The victim attempted to catch the suspect, but the suspect threatened to shoot him with a gun and the victim terminated the pursuit. A description of the suspect was obtained and broadcast to officers.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to another residence in the same neighborhood for a report of another burglary that had just occurred. In this instance, it was reported that a person forced entry into that residence, began stealing items, located a 14 year old female, and attempted to sexually assault her. During this incident, the victim reported the male threatened that he had a gun and ordered her to do what he said, but the assault was thwarted by an adult returning to the residence and the male reportedly fled on foot. Officers flooded the area looking for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. It is believed the suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of property and/or money from this incident.

Officers canvassed the neighborhood and received information from residents that there has been a male hanging around the area the past couple days asking inappropriate questions of people about where and when they go to work. This person reportedly went by the street name of “Freaky Tone.” The public is encouraged to contact police if this sounds familiar.

It is not known whether the two crimes mentioned in this release are connected, however evidence suggests they are. The descriptions given by the victims and witnesses of each incident were very similar and the method of entry into the residences was the same. The male was described by all as a black male having a light to medium complexion, 5’5″ – 5’8″, medium build, approximately 20 years old, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt with red sleeves, blue jeans, and grey/black “Polo” shoes.

This suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and the public is encouraged to not confront this person and to call police if they believe they know who or where this person is. Both of these incidents remain under investigation.

Robbery at Gaslight Village

November 1, 2012

The ICPD reports:

On October 31, 2012 at approximately 11:33 p.m., Iowa City Police officers responded to Black’s Gaslight Village at 422 Brown St. for a report of an armed person. While enroute, officers were informed that there were two separate calls from people reporting they had been robbed. Multiple officers flooded the area, but were unable to immediately locate the suspect. Upon speaking with the victims, it was learned a male approached them, displayed a black handgun, pointed the gun directly at them, and demanded their purses. One of the victims ran into a residence and got away from the suspect while the other gave the suspect her purse and he then ran away to the east on Brown St. Both of these robberies occurred within a couple minutes of each other at separate locations in the complex and it’s believed both were committed by the same person. An undisclosed amount of property and money was stolen during these robberies, but fortunately no one was injured during this incident.

From speaking with the victims and witnesses, it was determined the most accurate description of the suspect was a thin black male, approximately 5’10″ – 6’0″, in his 20′s-30′s wearing a dark blue or black hoody with white writing on it, dark pants, and dark shoes with white edges. The suspect also had a red bandana covering his face during the robbery.

The Daily Iowan followed up and talked with one of the victims:

She sat on her stoop late Tuesday evening following a rehearsal shortly before midnight. The 24-year-old graduate student was making a phone call to check up on a close friend who lived in New York to see if he was affected by Hurricane Sandy.

“I sit on the stoop a lot; I am used to people walking down the gravel path, but I usually know all the people walking down there,” she said.

The woman, who requested anonymity, noticed the unfamiliar figure walking down the path but couldn’t decipher who he was from his body type and fairly good posture.

“He was coming at me and walking casually. As he got 10 feet away from me I saw the red bandana. I jumped up and grabbed the door handle, but he got right in front of me and pulled the gun out of his sleeve,” she said. “[He] said something, but it was muffled, and I screamed and hurled myself down the stairs and one of my neighbors saw him walking away.”

The roommates quickly responded to her screams and called police, who responded shortly after.

The University of Iowa released a Hawk Alert shortly following police investigation stating there was an armed robbery that took place on the 400 block of Brown Street, and a tall skinny, black male wearing a dark hoodie and pants with a bandana over his face was walking toward Van Buren Street.

This incident is not an anomaly.

Iowa City police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said although she was unable to provide specific numbers, there has been a noted increase in the number of robberies in the last year, and unfortunately the setting lends itself to these issues.

“We have an opportunistic environment that people will come here because there is lots of foot traffic, and people in this age range will have iPhones and iPads and laptops,” she said.

Brotherton said that while police will investigate the situation and search for the suspect or suspects, students and community members need to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Yet the 24-year-old victim, who hails from a big city, said that in general, most students and young women should be provided more education and self-defense training, even though she considers Iowa City a “safe community.”

“I walk downtown by myself all the time, and I’ve never had any problems, and I guess I am really rethinking that,” she said.

Karla Miller, the executive director for the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, said awareness of your surroundings is extremely important when out alone or with small groups.

“We encourage people to be aware of what kinds of situations might occur and encourage people to get a good understanding of how perpetrators work and how they are different,” she said.

Dolphin Lake Butts Heads With ICHA; Contract Suspended

October 24, 2012

The Iowa City Housing Authority spends $6 million a year on subsidizing the living expenses of “low-income families”. Without ICHA assistance many of the persons featured on this website over the years would likely never have  darkened our doorsteps. Dolphin Lake, the Premier Iowa City Slum, has evidently offended its largest customer. The Press-Citizen reports:

Approximately 45 families living at Iowa City’s Dolphin Lake Point Enclave that rely on governmental rent assistance will have to relocate next spring after the city cancelled the complex’s Housing Assistance Payments contract.

Steven Rackis, administrator of the Iowa City Housing Authority, said the cancellation is the result of repeated violations of the HAP contract made by Dolphin Lake Point Enclave.

“The city’s been working with Dolphin Point for a couple of years to rectify some of the issues out there,” Rackis said Wednesday. “We’ve had a series of meetings with them over the last couple of years…The Housing Authority basically had enough.”

Rackis said the letter informing the families of the cancellation was mailed on Monday. The letter informs the recipient the reasons for the contract breach and that the HAP contracts will be cancelled at the end of May.

“If the tenant remains in the unit after May 31, 2013, they will be responsible for the entire monthly rent,” the letter states.

Shakila and Ki’el Donte Require Laptops

October 23, 2012

The ICPD reports:

On October 21, 2012 at approximately 10:41 p.m., Iowa City Police officers responded to 409 South Dodge St. for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. Responding officers learned that three black males had entered the residence and one of the males pulled out a handgun, pointed it directly at two separate victims, and demanded they place laptop computers into a backpack. All three suspects then fled the area.

Detectives from ICPD’s Street Crimes Unit (S.C.A.T.) along with several patrol officers continued investigating and ultimately caught the suspects in a vehicle along with a female who was later confirmed to also be involved. One of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle and ran, but was quickly caught. Subsequent searches led officers to the stolen computers, but the gun has not yet been recovered.

Continued investigation determined that the male who had the gun is currently 17 years old. He was charged with two counts of Robbery in the First Degree (Class B Felony), Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (Class C Felony), Assault while Participating in a Felony (Class D Felony), and Going Armed with Intent (Class D Felony).

Another male, also 17 years old, was charged with Theft in the Second Degree (Class D Felony) and Accessory to a Felony (Aggravated Misdemeanor).

The female was identified as Shakila Ann Holder, 18 years old, and she was charged with Theft in the Second Degree (Class D Felony) and Accessory to a Felony (Aggravated Misdemeanor).

The remaining male was identified as 19 year old Ki’el Donte Washington. He was arrested on an unrelated arrest warrant and charged from this incident with Interference with Official Acts (Simple Misdemeanor).

All suspects involved are believed to have been captured and no one was injured in this incident. This matter remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
