Paris Don’t Play

The Press-Citizen reports:

Police said an Iowa City woman threatened a group of people with a steak knife Friday morning.

The woman told police she was first threatened with a gun.

According to criminal complaints, Iowa City police officers responded at 12:51 a.m. Friday to 1237 Burns Ave. for a report of a fight in progress. The responding officer witnessed a subject, later identified as 29-year-old Paris N. Toomer, of 91 Aniston St., swinging a steak knife toward people in an aggressive manner.

Police said that when Toomer saw the officer, she dropped the knife and told him that she “had a gun to her face.” Toomer allegedly told police that when a subject — who was not identified in criminal complaints — pulled a gun on her, she left, got the steak knife and confronted the subject, who she claims threatened her with the gun.

Toomer told police she went to the residence to confront the subjects who she said assaulted the father of her child. She brought the knife because she “wasn’t scared to die” for her family, according to criminal complaints.

Iowa City Police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said officers were unable to confirm whether a gun was pulled but noted that complete reports from the responding officers were not yet submitted Friday.

“I’m not aware that they located a gun or a person in possession of a gun,” Brotherton said.

Toomer also is accused of slashing the rear tires of another person’s vehicle.

Police said Toomer provided a breath test of .107 and admitted to consuming alcohol before the incident.

Toomer was arrested and faces charges of going armed with intent, a class D felony; fourth-degree criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor.

The Press-Citizen reports:

An Iowa City man and an Arkansas woman were arrested Wednesday for purchasing gas with a stolen credit card and possession of cocaine.

According to criminal complaints, 28-year-old Leeann D. Hopson and 54-year-old Nathan L. Burgs went to the IC Pit Stop, 300 Kirkwood Ave., at 2:37 p.m., and purchased $30 worth of gas with a stolen credit card. Police said the credit card, and the wallet it was in, was stolen from Starbucks 30 minutes earlier.

Police said after forging the victim’s signature to purchase the gas, Hopson pumped another $25 worth of gas. The clerk denied the transaction because he believed Hopson and Burgs were attempting to purchase the fuel with a stolen credit card. After the suspected theft was reported to police, Hopson and Burgs fled in a Honda Accord with Arkansas license plates.

Police said a Good Samaritan followed the car to the Goodwill parking lot, where he observed Hopson trying to change her licenses plates. The Good Samaritan called the police and officers were able to stop Hopson and Burgs as they were going through the Taco Bell drive-thru.

Police said they found a crack pipe hidden in a cigarette box in Hopson’s purse. They also located a small baggie of cocaine in Burgs’ wallet. Police said they located multiple small baggies in Hopson’s vehicle with a white powder residue that tested positive for cocaine.

Police said Hopson also gave officers a fake name due to the fact that she was wanted in Arkansas for battery, aggravated robbery and burglary.

Hopson and Burgs were arrested. Hopson faces charges of forgery, unauthorized use of a credit card, third-degree theft, making a false report to police and possession of cocaine. Burgs faces charges of unauthorized use of a credit card, third-degree theft and possession of cocaine, second-offense.

According to criminal complaints, the first incident occurred at 8:45 a.m. March 23 at the Old Capitol Town Center. The victim reported to police that Bramwell exposed himself, then asked the woman for her name and phone number.

Five hours later, another woman reported that Bramwell was grinning at her as he exposed himself when she drove by him as he stood on Court Street near Gilbert Street. Police located Bramwell and the woman positively identified him. Bramwell also had the phone number of the woman he exposed himself to earlier in his phone.

Bramwell was placed under arrest for indecent exposure. While seated in the back of the arresting officer’s squad car, Bramwell allegedly attempted to eat the marijuana he had with him. The officer recovered the plastic baggie and flakes of marijuana that were on Bramwell’s shirt, seat and in the baggie.

Police said Bramwell admitted to eating the marijuana.

Police also said Bramwell had a $1,000 worth of stolen property with him at the time of the arrest. The property was stolen in a burglary that had occurred just hours earlier, the police said. Police said they tried to obtain a search warrant for Bramwell’s residence. However, Bramwell provided officers with an address that did not belong to him.

Bramwell’s son provided officers with his correct address, police said.

Bramwell faces two counts of indecent exposure, one count of preventing prosecution, one count of possession of marijuana and one count of interference with official acts.

The Press-Citizen reports:

Police said an Iowa City woman had a blood-alcohol content five times more than the legal limit to operate a vehicle when she was arrested Wednesday night.

Iowa City police were called at 11:23 p.m. to 2401 Highway 6 E. for a report from a cab driver of a woman refusing to pay the fare for her cab. Police said the woman, 40-year-old Diedra Hondras, had no cash or credit cards to pay for the cab ride.

Police said they immediately noticed Hondras’ bloodshot, watery eyes and other signs of intoxication, as well as a strong odor of alcohol coming from her. She had a mostly consumed bottle of vodka with her, police said.

A preliminary breath test indicated Hondras’ blood-alcohol content was more than .200 percent. Subsequent testing at the hospital showed her blood-alcohol content to be more than .400 percent.

Wednesday was not the first time Hondras was found to have a highly elevated blood-alcohol content. In September 2011, Hondras was found to be drunk in front of the Fieldhouse Bar. Police said a bar patron found Hondras in the restroom, struggling to pull up her pants. The patron helped Hondras out of the bar.

Police said they found a water bottle containing vodka — which Hondras admitted to drinking throughout the night — in her purse. Hondras provided a preliminary breath test of .375 percent and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment, according to police records.

Police said Hondras has previous public intoxication convictions from May 2011, June 2010 and April 2009.

Hondras faces two counts of public intoxication – third or subsequent offense, fifth-degree theft and possession of an open container of alcohol in public. She remains in the Johnson County Jail on a $10,500 cash-only bond.

An Iowa City man was arrested for drunken driving when he passed out at a red light in the middle of downtown Iowa City.

According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, a “full complement” of emergency response vehicles were dispatched to the intersection of College and Gilbert streets at 6:19 p.m. Thursday for a man that was passed out in the driver’s seat of a running car. An Iowa City police officer was the first to arrive on the scene and observed a man, later identified as 31-year-old Kelvin O. Robinson, passed out in the driver’s seat.

The officer entered the car through the backseat and could hear Robinson sleeping, police said. Robinson appeared to be snoring, police said.

Police said the officer put the car in park and opened the driver’s door for firefighters and paramedics on the scene. The paramedics were able to wake up Robinson and determined there was nothing medically wrong with him.

Police said Robinson smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage and admitted to drinking earlier in the day. He allegedly told the officer he thought he “slept it off.” Police said Robinson stopped for a red light and fell asleep.

Robinson failed field sobriety tests and submitted to breath tests, which indicated a blood-alcohol content between .112 and .114 percent. He was arrested and charged with drunken driving.
